LAYERS : Ben Schuh + Laura Palmer
Iowa artists, Ben Schuh and Laura Palmer have work that can be seen all over their home city of Des Moines. Sure, their paths crossed from time to time, but the two exchanged Facebook messages often (how Millennial of them) with dreams of collaboration.
Laura Palmer handed over a stack of her prints (that she was feeling particularly uninspired by) to Ben Schuh. Thus began an artistic collaboration that developed, quite literally, in layers. The one-of-a-kind pieces of art are true collaborations: the artists worked independently after each exchange of work, adding to the pieces with paint, markers, watercolors and stickers. The process had no rules, some works were more successful than others, but ultimately, the results were inspiring.
Ben is a dedicated artist and muralist whose goal is to work with his clients and collectors while challenging himself to excel and reach new heights. He has been pushing his solo career at BENSCHUH.com and has iconic murals like #CheersFromDesMoines, #TimelessBeaverdale, #ISFMural (Iowa State Fair), and Lasting Legacy for Drake University. In addition, he also owns Plum Forward, an artistic services business in the Des Moines metro.

A lifelong Iowan who values a thoughtfully handwritten note, Laura started XO-LP in 2009 producing illustrations made with highlighters, markers and wit. In 2014, she went from full-time fundraiser to full-time illustrator, a dream she's had since creating her first hand-made greeting card in 1988.
In addition to her own line of paper goods, Laura has worked with clients to create custom holiday cards, editorial illustrations and one-of-a-kind illustrated projects.
