Large Scale Work
Greenwood Elementary School Mural
Des Moines, Iowa 2022
Working with the students and the art teacher, Ms. Alyssa Moll, I created this 528 square foot mural at Greenwood Elementary School. After spending a week with the kids in art class explaining what it means to be an illustrator, I took the students’ drawings of “school spirit” and mixed them with my illustrations to create this giant piece.
Using a projector and chalk over three nights and black paint and sponge brushes over three days, I completed the 44 x 12 foot mural, just in time for Greenwood’s field day. The final mural is filled with school spirit illustrations from the students and from me. It looks over the Greenwood Elementary School playground and will be enjoyed by kids and families for years to come.
Muscatine Water Tower
Muscatine, Iowa 2020
In 2019, the Iowa Finance Authority hosted an “It’s in the Water” contest where Iowa cities could submit a video for the chance to win a custom water tower designed by me. Working with the Department of Economic Development, I worked with the 2019 contest winner (and my hometown) the city of Muscatine, Iowa.
Using input from the Muscatine committee and the team at Muscatine Power and Water, I created a custom design that features illustrated icons representing things that make Muscatine extra special.
Holmes Murphy Office Mural
West Des Moines, IA, 2022
Using Sharpie markers, I created this wall mural for the Holmes Murphy office in West Des Moines.
It began with a blank, white wall and 10 industrial Sharpie markers. Once the illustrations were complete, the Holmes Murphy team was able to “color in” the wall with their new brand colors at an annual meeting. I facilitated the painting and offered encouragement to the “staff artists” who participated.
VizyPay Office Wall Mural
West Des Moines, IA 2021
As VizyPay prepared to open their new offices in Waukee, Iowa, Moberg Gallery reached out with an opportunity to create a feature wall for the space.
Using VizyPay’s mission, clients and company culture as inspiration, I created this “neighborhood” themed illustration. The drawings were then printed on large sheets of vinyl and installed like wall paper.
Inspired by the Highlights Magazine of my youth, this 45 foot mural is full of hidden images that are meaningful to the VizyPay team. It’s one of my favorite projects to date.
City Sounds Piano
Des Moines, IA 2018
The City Sounds project hires artist to add art to donated pianos that are then placed around the Des Moines Metro.
After painting the piano white, I used sharpie markers to fill the piano with whimsical drawings that represent the city of Des Moines mixed with musical notes and symbols.
After sealing the piano to protect the drawings from the elements, it sat in the city of Windsor Heights for the public to play and enjoy.
The Bacon Box Food Stand
Iowa State Fair, Des Moines, IA 2019
When Brad Magg and Dom Iannarelli pitched their food truck “The Bacon Box” I knew that a pig with sunglasses was the perfect mascot for the bacon stand for the Iowa State Fair.
Working with Amanda Reynal and the menu Brad and Dom created, I drew a set of icons that would be used on the food truck, all promotional materials and fun giveaways for the Iowa State Fair. We also created the Iowa State Fair’s newest, most popular photo op: fair goers could snap their pic with the now famous “cool pig” from The Bacon Box.
The food truck debuted in 2019 and took a hiatus, like we all did, in 2020, but came back with all the bacon balls in 2021.
Rogue Jump Box for Carrie Underwood
Des Moines, IA 2016
When artists travel through Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa, the team presents the artist with a personal gift. In 2016, Carrie Underwood was presented with this custom illustrated Rogue jump box.
The Wells Fargo Arena team provided me with a blank Rogue plyo box that I then covered with Sharpie drawings that represented Carrie Underwood’s Calia fitness wear brand and it’s “girl power” messaging. The box was presented to her before her concert and (according to the Wells Fargo Arena staff) she started to jump up on it in her performance heels before her management warned her against it.
In March 2020, Carrie Underwood’s book Find Your Path came out and featured photos of her working out on this very jump box. In the book she shares her workout plan, Fit52 that also is a fitness app.
Bud Light Summer Cooler, 2021
In the summer of 2021, Anheuser Busch connected with local artists in key markets to partner with them in “Making summer cooler.”
Mixing Iowa icons and summer favorites with Bud Light logos, I created this illustrated cooler to represent the hot season here in Iowa. Less than 10 of these coolers were produced, including one that I was able to giveaway on Instagram to one lucky commenter.
Orchestrate Hospitality Kids’ Menus
2017-Present
Orchestrate Hospitality in Des Moines, IA works with me to create their colorable kids’ menus for each of their restaurants. Using the menu items and restaurant theme as inspiration, I create a “find and color” illustration that is then printed as needed. Each restaurant has their own special menu design that includes nods to the city of Des Moines.
