CLASS OFFERINGS
Mark Rothko, Agnes Martin, and Invader use squares and rectangles in very different ways to create their signature styles—Martin with quiet, thoughtful grids and monochromatic tones,Rothko with bold, emotional color fields and Invader with playful, mosaic-like designs. In “Playing with Squares,” students explore how these artists use simple shapes to express mood, pattern, and a story.
Students leave with:
A Rothko painting made with tempura sticks
A delicate painting inspired by Martin
A construction paper mosaic inspired by Invader’s street art.
Bridget Riley, Keith Haring, and Piet Mondrian each used lines in bold and imaginative ways to create movement, rhythm, and energy in their artwork. Riley used repeating lines to create optical illusions, Mondrian organized lines into balanced geometric compositions, and Haring used playful, expressive outlines to tell stories through symbols. In “Playing with Lines,” students explore how lines can create pattern, movement, emotion, and visual storytelling.
Students leave with:
An optical illusion drawing made in the style of Riley
A lively line drawing like Haring’s work
Washi-tape Mondrian drawings
Sonia Delaunay, Georges Seurat, and Terry Frost used circles in dynamic and colorful ways to build rhythm, light, and movement. Delaunay layered vibrant circular shapes to create energy and motion, Seurat used tiny dots of color to form larger images, and Frost explored bold circular forms inspired by nature and everyday life. In “Playing with Circles,” students experiment with repetition, color, and composition while discovering how circles can transform a piece of art.
Students leave with:
Moody tempura stick circle drawings like Delaunay’s
Seraut inspired pointillism paintings
Cut paper circle collages inspired by Frost’s work
Henri Matisse, Polina Belenchuk, and Lorna Simpson each layer shapes, color, and imagery to create rich and meaningful artwork. Matisse used cut paper shapes to build playful compositions, Belenchuk combines geometric forms and bold color in portraits, and Simpson uses photos and layered elements to explore identity. In “Layering Shapes,” students discover how artists combine simple forms to create texture and narrative in their work.
Students leave with:
Organic shape collages like Matisse’s later works
Collage portraits inspired by Belenchuk
Imaginative hair illustrations done in the style of Simpson
